Tough questions I wish I had asked before they were gone

November 4, 2015November 4, 2015 Paula Stuart-Warren  Family, Oral history  4 Comments

My bookshelves hold several books on oral history. One of my favorites is My Backyard History Book. It was published in 1975 and is out of print but it often shows up on used book websites.  It is written for children and for some reason it always spoke to me. (Please no joking about my […]

My Family Tree DNA ethnic makeup

September 22, 2015September 22, 2015 Paula Stuart-Warren  DNA, Family  Leave a comment

My FTDNA ethnic makeup is not all that different from that on AncestryDNA as shown in the preceding post except that FTDNA doesn’t show my Danish and Swedish roots. My oldest son’s ethnic makeup is 100% European and does show some Scandinavian. On Ancestry I have 7% Iberian Peninsula and this FTDNA maps shows that […]

My Ancestry DNA pie chart. Irish is the highest group.

September 22, 2015September 22, 2015 Paula Stuart-Warren  DNA, Family  4 Comments

I have done DNA testing with Ancestry.com and FamilyTreeDNA. These show I am more Irish than anything. That’s not a surprise. I know that these estimates could change as the number of people tested grows. I have a bombed ancestral church, a church that neglected to keep records for a number of years, and some […]

A cemetery in California adapts to the 21st century

August 30, 2015 Paula Stuart-Warren  Cemetery, Family, Slaker  1 Comment

The 700 acre Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California, is joining in on saving water. According to an article in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Rose Hills once required 293 million gallons of potable water a year, as much used in several cities. The article further states: “On Wednesday, the cemetery put an end […]

I have proof! Are my children listening? I am smarter than a 5th grader!

July 5, 2015July 5, 2015 Paula Stuart-Warren  Family, Scotland  2 Comments

Downsizing is always tough. Getting rid of paper is tough. Scanning is preserving some of it. I am gradually doing this and printed words from the past that I find bring joy, sadness, and laughter. A marriage license, report cards, greeting cards with special messages, poetry someone wrote for me, photos from high school, notes […]

June 15th reminds me of yellow, as in everything in my childhood

June 15, 2015June 15, 2015 Paula Stuart-Warren  Family  2 Comments

Yellow. That was my Mom’s favorite color. Today would have been her 89th birthday. I grew up in a yellow house with a yellow fence. I helped repaint that house and fence many times. When I was a child she even had a yellow convertible.  She had a favorite yellow suit. I remember other yellow […]

Umlauts matter in genealogy and in Lindström, Minnesota

April 18, 2015April 22, 2015 Paula Stuart-Warren  Family, Minnesota, Uncategorized  7 Comments

Umlaut: a mark placed over the top of a vowel to indicate a specific pronunciation. I see the use of umlauts in my Swedish and German research. Minnesota Department of Transportation sign rules meant the lack of the umlaut over the “o” for a sign in the town of Lindström, Minnesota. This caused a furor […]

Genealogist and Great Grandmother all in one

September 12, 2014November 21, 2014 Paula Stuart-Warren  Family, grandchildren  1 Comment

Last week I posted about the birth of my first great grandchild. I spent yesterday afternoon with the latest addition to our family, itty bitty Lucas. He is under 6 lbs and is so light to hold. My granddaughter commented recently that being a young great grandmother is neat since I get to spend many […]

My first great grandchild on Labor Day!

September 1, 2014November 21, 2014 Paula Stuart-Warren  Family  Leave a comment

It will always be a special family joke that my first granddaughter gave birth to my first great grandchild on Labor Day! Lucas arrived this morning. I feel giddy. I had no trouble sleeping through it all. I had the phone on silent and slept 12 hours upon my return from the FGS genealogy conference […]

“No longer saved for generations, family heirlooms are being shed”

April 20, 2013November 21, 2014 Paula Stuart-Warren  Family, history  Leave a comment

That is the title of an article in today’s online Star-Tribune. I know from my own experience that not all family members want to hang on to furniture, dishes, and other items. The sentences that really hit me are “Even highly personal items, such as scrapbooks, letters and photos, are now being shed. “We’re surprised,” […]
